Gary Smith pays tribute to the teeny-bop sound of Marc Bolan's T Rex (Letters, September 11) without acknowledging Marc fronted its much more talented and inventive predecessor, Tyrannosaurus Rex.
I remember chatting to Marc after an excellent set performed at an all-night gig at the Lyceum in The Strand, London, back in the early Seventies and being struck by his commitment to producing ground-breaking music.
Tyrannosaurus Rex was "underground" (that is, with artistic, not commercial, values) but, with the shortened name, former fans considered Marc had sold short (and sold out) when churning out samey two-minute chart hits that mainly appealed to screaming 12-year-old girls... and Gary Smith.
