Record crowds boosted an air show's takings to £100,000.

More than 40,000 people went to Shoreham airport for this year's Battle of Britain Airshow.

The dazzling display of daredevil aeronautics featured a fly-past to mark the 60th anniversary of the mighty Lancaster bomber's maiden flight.

Organisers hoped the historic attractions would help boost the amount of money raised. But they were astonished when they discovered they had netted a massive £15,000 more than last year.

All the money will be distributed to the Royal Air Force Association's Wings Appeal which provides homes and help for retired service personnel.

The team behind this year's spectacular event have already started planning the 2002 show, which will be held on August 31 and September 1.

Rafa spokesman John Periam said: "We're enormously grateful and proud of the dedication and hard work of all those who took part and assisted in the organisation, without whom this fantastic target would not have been reached."

The Argus, which sponsored the event, sold 16,000 tickets in advance, with thousands more enthusiasts arriving on the day from across Britain and further afield.

Mr Periam said: "The show is enjoyed by all the crews, display pilots and crowds and is now one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the South Coast."

He said the Danish pilots who flew in to give an ear-shattering demonstration of the F16's prowess for the first time this year had already confirmed they would be roaring back next year.
