A group of girls has outclassed youngsters from across the UK to win a coveted national engineering award.

Carol Cook, Nicola Davis, Asma Nila Oddud, all 13, and Ellen Ward, 14, were awarded the honour for their replica of an Edwardian seaside bus.

The bus, which is large enough to carry the four girls, can be manually driven as well as being operated remotely.

It received huge praise from judges at the Young Engineers for Britain Awards in London, who awarded them first prize and £1,000 prize money.

The Bexhill High School pupils were presented with the award in the 11 to 14 category at the ceremony at the Business Design Centre in London hosted by BBC presenter Matthew Price.

Thousands of aspiring young engineers from schools and colleges entered the competition which is regarded as the biggest showcase of young engineering talent in the UK.

Juliet Upton, of the Engineering Council, said: "The Edwardian Seaside Bus is a fully-working, elegant winner with a strong engineering content."
