Opposition is growing to the buildings proposed for either side of the West Pier in Brighton for the restoration to become a viable proposition.
It's been known for some time there would have to be a big development - because this is a big project.
Those who object to the size of the buildings are being reminded, correctly, that if anything smaller is proposed, no developer will be interested and the pier will never be revived.
They have known for some time about their size and they have not squealed before. It's a bit late now.
Disagreement over the current design is another matter. It's becoming clear there will have to be alterations before it comes anything near a project the planning committee will accept.
But if the buildings do not go ahead, the West Pier will be left to rot in the middle of the renovated seafront and the taxpayers will have to pick up the bill.
