A disabled woman was forced to seek refuge in a house after teenagers pelted her with stones.
The woman, who has not been named, was riding on an electric scooter for people with mobility problems when the attack happened.
She was riding on the pavement in Victoria Road, Shoreham, when a group of youths blocked her way.
After she had gone past, some of the group began throwing stones at her.
They continued to follow her, jeering and throwing stones, as she tried to escape from them.
Inspector Chris Drew, of Shoreham police, said: "The victim was so frightened that she sought refuge in a house in Windlesham Road.
"It is beyond belief that a disabled person can be treated in this way and we are anxious to trace those responsible.
"Fortunately, the victim was not hurt but she was quite badly shaken up by her experience."
Anyone with information is asked to call Shoreham police on 0845 6070999.
