Andy Richards (Letters, September 18) finds Alan Bacon's praise for the way Mayor Giuliani has provided leadership and support for the people of New York "tasteless".
Tasteless or not, Mr Bacon's opinions pale into insignificance next to Mr Richards' apparent justification for the actions of the terrorists who committed this atrocity. No matter what the imbalance of wealth and resources between nations, there can be no justification for the murder of innocent people.
Sadly, I was not surprised by Mr Richards' views, no doubt shared by his Socialist Alliance comrades. Recent correspondents have rightly reminded The Argus readers of support given by members of the Socialist Alliance for previous terrorist outrages such as the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel. It would appear, though times change, the support of the extreme left for terrorists does not.
Surely the time has come for decent politicians who belong to Allies For Democracy - of which Socialist Alliance is a key supporter - to disassociate themselves from the extremists who defend terrorism?
In comparison with the tragic events in the US, a vote for or against a mayor is of little importance. However, as supporters of democracy, we should all stand firm against extremists.
