Haywards Heath won their first away match in London One but skipper Henry Goodburn insisted his side could still improve.
Heath scored five tries in a 32-22 success at Cambridge but it needed a late Owen Ashton penalty to settle their nerves.
Goodburn admitted: "The tries were well worked but we leaked too many points. Other sides will punish us for allowing them so much space."
Alex Meredith's darting run set up the first score for Mark Pymm. Fullback Andy Cook then created a try for Vince Rolandi before going over himself after Meredith had chipped through.
Tries either side of the interval helped Cambridge back to 17-15 but Meredith picked up a loose ball to scamper 30 yards for a try which Gordon Denslow improved with his second conversion of the day.
Damien Lyall looked to have settled the contest when he got up in support of Dave Virgin's charge but a late converted try allowed Cambridge back into the match before replacement Ashton slotted his penalty.
Away wins are a bonus for Goodburn and his men, whose key objective is to protect their long unbeaten run at Whitemans Green.
Harlow are their next chellngers. The Essex club lost 33-12 at Basingstoke on Saturday and have made a mixed start to the campaign.
Goodburn said: "We are aiming to win all our home matches and that will put us in a good position to attack sides when we travel."
Heath: A. Cook, Pymm, Rolandi, Dowdall, H. Goodburn, Graham (Ashton 65), Meredith; Edwards, Denslow, Sherwood (Sheppard 70), Virgin, Atkin, Lyall, Rankin, Wattam (Travis 70).
