I have no idea whether a directly-elected mayor would be as bad as some people seem to think or whether a return to the old committee system would be worse, which others seem to think.

What I do know is the constant slanging match between the two sides is very counter-productive.

The vilification of Councillor Bassam by the No campaign is a disgrace.

I want to think calmly about what is right for Brighton and Hove before I even start to consider any personalities who might stand for office.

Once the question of whether or not we want an elected mayor has been settled, then I will look at the candidates and assess for myself whether they are fit for the job.
