Worthing does not have the deprivation which is widespread in parts of Hastings, Brighton and Hove.

Most of the seaside resort is prosperous. But behind the fine front and the busy shopping centre there is some poverty which needs addressing.

For many of those affected, their deprivation is in stark relief against the general well-being of Worthing.

Church Action on Poverty deserves congratulations for bringing this largely-hidden problem out into the open through a successful public meeting.

Much is being done already to help many of the worst-affected people. But the meeting may have pricked the consciences of many who did not know about such deprivation and encourage them to offer their help.
