Worthing are the unbeaten leaders in London Three South East, but they made hard work of their 25-11 win at Old Dunstonians.
Tries in the last ten minutes from Tim Wood, his second of the game, and Steve Imrie gave Worthing some breathing space but coach Ian Davies was far from happy with their performance.
He said: "It was very scrappy. We gave a lot of penalties away and didn't really perform as we can so a win in those circumstances is something we're happy to accept."
Danny Pigott and Anthony Cruz also crossed for the visitors but Cruz had a disappointing afternoon with the boot, missing five conversion attempts in the windy conditions.
East Grinstead are off the mark after a convincing 49-3 win over Crawley in a disappointingly one-sided local derby.
G's were back to something approaching full strength and ran in eight tries through Alex Ingham, Marcus Ayers, Guy Cook, Russell Taylor, Justin Smith, Ray Hennessey and Steve O'Reilly, who also kicked two conversions and a penalty against his old club before coming off at half-time. Grinstead's opening score was a penalty try while Crawley's consolation penalty was kicked by Andy Evans.
Dartfordians are hot on Worthing's heels after preserving their unbeaten record with a 13-7 win over Brighton at Waterhall.
But Brighton coach Bert Merritt was happy after a vastly improved performances by his side who piled on the pressure without reward in the last ten minutes when the visitors were down to 14 men.
"Defensively we were a lot better, but we have got to learn to take the opportunities when they come along," he said.
"We're still beating ourselves at the moment, but it will get better especially when we get one or two important players back in the side."
Fullback Morgan O'Connell got Brighton's try with Geraint Jones adding the conversion.
Lewes are still pointless after three games following their 34-0 defeat at Charlton Park.
