My wife was diagnosed with malignant breast cancer three years ago and subsequently underwent surgery followed by a course of chemotherapy and then radiotherapy.
She was diagnosed at the Nigel Porter Breast Care Unit, underwent her surgery at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and both chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the oncology unit on the same site.
Both my own and my wife's opinion of the work of the Nigel Porter and the oncology units - which work together in a very co-ordinated way - is that they comprise a centre of excellence.
Any suggestion they should be moved nearly 20 miles from the centre of our city in order to achieve what they already have is an outrage.
I also note that Stuart Welling, the chief executive of Brighton Health Care NHS Trust, is quoted as saying "the Nigel Porter unit...could even come under threat of closure if it failed to meet the Government targets" (October 8).
What sort of crass comment is that?
Isn't this also the same Mr Welling who has effectively and recently been put on three months' notice to either sort out the mess that is Brighton Health Care NHS Trust or lose his job?
At this time, Mr Welling needs the people of Brighton and Hove behind him.
Going ahead with the proposal to remove such a vital service to somewhere outside the city is no way of achieving that support.
