Brighton and Hove could have an EastEnders-style weekly market from next summer.
Talks have been held with a firm which organises street markets across England.
The idea of holding a Saturday market in a road off St James's Street has won backing from Brighton and Hove City Council.
Traders and community leaders have also given the plan their support.
The market might have a different theme each week as well as regular stalls.
One week it could be a clothes market, the next an antiques market or a farmers' market.
It could also be a venue for the popular Dieppe market which visits Brighton each year.
Tom Mannouch, secretary of the St James's Street Traders Association, said: "George Street, off St James's Street, is one possibility, but nothing has been decided."
City council leader Ken Bodfish, who represents the Queen's Park area of Kemp Town, said: " I am all in favour of this. Let's give it a go."
Former mayor and local councillor Jackie Lythell said: "I think a market would be a boost to the St James's Street area."
Shoppers in Worthing may also be attracted into the town centre by a new street market.
The Worthing Town Initiative has submitted a planning application for a twice-weekly market in Montague Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
