In Steve Bassam's rather fatuous and simplistic justification of an executive mayor (Letters, October 5), he alleges the Green Party opposes the best intentions of the Albion and the new library.
On the contrary, we have always supported the Albion calls for a local home and we welcome the new library. We continue to advocate Falmer is not suitable and that another site should be identified.
We object to the use of the Government's Private Finance Initiative to build and operate the library because it will cost residents four times as much as would building it ourselves.
We did oppose the city bid and are proud of that because it was obsessed with spin and marketing, in just the same way plans to make Brighton and Hove European City of Culture in 2008 are.
We need to exert our efforts and imagination to solve the real problems of the city and not pursue expensive campaigns to persuade the rest of the world we don't have any.
For anyone who remains undecided about having a new kind of mayor, be warned - this is simply a foretaste of what life would be like, whoever is elected. You can stop it happening by voting No.
