Sussex manager John Suter has revealed that only half his squad have confirmed their availability for Tuesday's South West Championship opener against Hampshire.
Suter said: "It is unacceptable, disappointing and worrying.
"All that has to be done is that clubs notify me of their players' availability. The players themselves can make contact. It isn't difficult. A phone call would do. I'm hoping a few will ring so I know where I am.
"I don't think it is because they don't want to play for their county. One player has played more than 50 times and another was always keen and loyal last season.
"I don't suppose Sven Goran Eriksson has these sort of problems with his England players, but joking aside it is a problem.
"It means I am chasing up players and possible alternatives in time I cannot really spare.
"Perhaps some of the players I selected who haven't been in touch will read this and give me a call. I certainly hope so."
Suter's problems have mounted because he has been hit by four withdrawals.
Jason Dumbrill (Horsham YMCA) and Wayne Farrier (Sidley) are injured. Adie Downey is away and Matt Smart is committed to playing for Eastbourne Borough against St Leonards just 24 hours before the county clash.
Suter had picked Smart believing he would only be a substitute for Dr Martens outfit Borough in the Sussex Senior Cup derby at The Firs.
But Smart has forced his way into the Borough side and looks as though he will start the tie.
Suter said: "I work around players who are with clubs outside of the County League and selected Matt on the basis he would be a substitute which meant he would have been okay to play for us."
