The RSPCA is looking for homes for five pint-sized ponies whose owner couldn't keep them.

The five dinky horses, each under 3ft tall, are being looked after by the charity on a Sussex farm.

RSPCA chief inspector Carroll Lamport said: "The horses are fairly good to catch and groom.

"They would make wonderful companion for a family which already has one or more horses and we are looking for special owners to take them on."

The group of animals includes a grey Falabella stallion, a miniature pony breed from Argentina, and four chestnut and bay miniature Shetland mares.

They were given to the RSPCA by their previous owner, who could not look after them any more.

RSPCA equine vet David McDowell warned people about the dangers of falling for the novelty factor of such an unusual pet.

He said: "While many people find these small ponies endearing, the reality is they need just as much time and commitment as a full-size pony or horse.

"They will need ample pasture, regular foot care, worming and vaccination as well as a twice-daily check.

"It is vital that we find owners who have the experience and resources to provide them with happy, permanent home."

The ponies, which are all about ten years old and could live for another ten, will need shelter and extra food during the winter.

Klare Kennett, of the RSPCA, said the ponies could be rehomed separately or together.

She said: "They are lovely animals which are more mature but still quite frisky. They do need to be cared for, so hopefully we will find the right places for them to enjoy the rest of their life."
