In October 1936, it was officially announced in Germany that the Gestapo's work was aimed at "the annihilation of the enemy, even if he is not about to be dangerous by a specific deed".

The Gestapo was one of the wickedest forces in history.

I was, however, unaware it gained any particular notoriety for dastardly acts of towing cars away, but G W King (Letters, October 16) indicates he fought as an RAF pilot against similar behaviour.

I'd always imagined Britain was, and still is, the bastion of the jobsworth's brigade (I've been one) so the unfortunate case of the care worker's car would be pretty true to form.
