I have rarely seen such a vitriolic editorial as that in The Argus on Saturday, following the result of the poll on a directly-elected mayor.

Whatever the leader-writer's personal feelings may be, it does nothing for The Argus to stoop to such low and unpleasant remarks.

I have read these comments to a number of friends at my golf club and, without exception, they declared themselves shocked.

I think an apology to all concerned is merited.
