Brighton trainer Ronnie Davies is as pleased as punch after receiving another invitation for his prospect Chill John to spar with WBU lightweight champion Colin Dunne.
John, 23, completed his sixth straight victory since turning professional last Saturday night on the undercard of the Tony Oakey versus Chris Davies title fight at Portsmouth.
Davies said: "Chill gave a flawless performance in Portsmouth and put Mark Halstead down in the fifth round. I felt the referee should probably have stepped in and stopped it at that point but he allowed him to continue.
"It just shows that Chill is adding more power to his punching and it was a cracking right-hander. He never lost a round and I am expecting good things from this lad."
Since the fight, Davies has been contact by Dunne's manager and John is going up to the Lennox Lewis Centre to spar with him today as the Dynamo steps up his preparation to defend his title in November.
It was a good night for Davies, Chris Eubank's former trainer, in Portsmouth with light-heavyweight Oakey making his first defence of his Commonwealth title against Welsh dangerman Chris Davies from Cardiff and winning narrowly on points in a Sky televised bout.
Middleweight Ty Browne also won on points against Harry Butler (Wales) to give Davies a hat-trick.
Hove boxer Paul Halpin will have to wait until the end of the year before the British Boxing Board of Control return his licence.
The BBBC are to take two further blood samples before passing the unbeaten featherweight fit to fight again.
Halpin has been in limbo because of recurring blood problems. A low platelet count, the particles crucial to blood clotting, caused the British Boxing Board of Control to suspend Halpin's licence.
Halpin said: "It's a blow as I was intending to fight on November 7 but that has to be cancelled.
"However, I have spoken with my manager and Frank Warren and they have given me peace of mind as I was finding it hard to focus as the BBBC seem to keep moving the goalposts. Frank Warren is happy to go ahead with three comeback fights and then a title fight and I am continuing to train as if I was coming up to a fight."
