The Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum is the latest in a long line of exceptionally- versatile sound cards from Creative Labs.
With 24-bit multi-channel performance, four times more processing power than any other sound blaster, and compatibility with most home audio entertainment equipment, this card looks like taking the digital music world by storm.
The real difference for the end-user is an external (bay- mounted) drive that offers an infra-red control system operated through a neat, remote handset.
The handset enables the user to adjust volume, change speakers and select extra user- definable functions from the comfort of an armchair.
Installation is relatively easy. Having removed the top of the computer case, the Audigy Platinum card simply drops into a slot on the computer motherboard while the drive unit bolts into a standard drive bay at the front of the computer case.
The connections are clearly marked and, providing the instructions are followed faithfully, the unit should take about an hour to install and initialise.
The easiest part of the installation is the loading of the software. Creative Labs has developed a brand new range of applications designed for the advanced home entertainment user.
These need a little experience to understand and a lot of patience to learn but the overall effect is well worth the effort. All cables are included.
The card is designed to give high-quality sound reproduction suitable for computer gaming, audio playback and movie/video soundtracks.
Software functions are exceptional and include tools for cleaning soundtracks, a 64-channel mixer and crystal-clear audio resolution.
This means the Audigy Platinum sounds absolutely fantastic. At considerably less than £200, it has to be on any audiophile's Christmas wish list.
