A woman was cut free from her car after a smash with a bus in Portslade today.

The car collided with a Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company single-decker at the junction of Bush Farm Drive and Fox Way.

Residents have labelled the junction - where buses have to turn sharply right and head up a steep hill - an "accident waiting to happen".

Firefighters removed the roof of the woman's vehicle to cut her free and she was lifted into a waiting ambulance after the accident, at about 8am.

The bus driver was shaken but unhurt and there were no passengers on board.

Jack Pigden, 63, who lives in nearby Crest Way, said: "Quite often we have seen near misses with buses pulling out and someone coming over the brow of the hill.

"The bus drivers' vision is limited and they cannot get up any speed.

"It was an accident waiting to happen. Something has to be done to slow down cars coming down the hill."

Bus company managing director Roger French said: "I think it would be helpful if something was done to slow traffic coming down Fox Way.

"It is not just buses affected when they pull out. Sight lines are restricted."

Mr French confirmed there were no passengers on board as the bus had just started its journey.
