Eastbourne Town are quietly mounting a promotion challenge in division two of the Rich City County League.

It has certainly not been a blockbusting start to the season for a side relegated from division one last season.

But, under new boss Dave Winterton and his assistant Alan Walsh, Town are now tenth in the table and just six points off second spot.

Walsh, the former Shinewater manager, said: "We are starting to get things right but we needed that win on Saturday to keep with the pack.

"The key to how we do this year is our home form. In November we are at home to Storrington, East Grintead, Oving and Bosham. If we can pick up maximum points from those games, you would not expect everybody above us to do the same.

"The main aim is to try to get into the top six by Christmas. If not, we might have to look for (promotion) the following year."

Eastbourne Town fell behind after only two minutes against Broadbridge Heath on Saturday as Paul Young netted his 15th of the campaign.

Mark Downey finished off a flowing move to make it 1-1 at half time and Stefan Fuller fired home a late winner from Ian Verow' corner.

Leaders Shoreham struck twice late on to win 4-2 at Westfield.

The deadlock was broken on the stroke of half time when Westfield's Kevin Rose was sent off for deliberately handling a shot from Mark Pulling and Warren Levy netted from the spot.

Pulling doubled the lead two minutes into the second half but Westfield rallied to draw level with strikes from Grant Murray and Trevor Burgess.

Shoreham threw on substitutes Ben Boiling and Rob Craven, who both made an impact. Boiling restored Shoreham's lead on 85 minutes and Craven set up Lloyd Vanson for a fourth on the stroke of full time.

Manager Roger Brace said: "It is a difficult place to go. If someone had said before we could have a half decent performance and a 1-1 draw, I would have been happy. As it was, we had a half decent performance and three points, so I am very happy."

Doug Cashman scored four times as Crawley Down won 6-1 at Storrington.

Danny Kemsley also netted twice, although team-mate Nick Sullivan is trying to claim one of them. Richard Hack got Storrington's reply.

Crawley Down boss Stuart Hobbs said: "It was a good performance all round. Doug was on fire and took his chances very well but we could have scored more."

Wealden's recent signing Syd Harman scored twice as his new side won 5-1 at Bosham. Lee Sale also grabbed two and man-of-the-match Darren Brown got the other.

Joint manager Neil Thornicroft said: "Syd is a very good player. He is lacking a bit of sharpness and match fitness but his quality shows. His first one was opportunist brilliance and his second was finished with great aplomb."

The win was important to Wealden after a disappointing start to the season. The goals have been flying in but Thornicroft added: "It is the defensive aspect of our play which we have been lacking."

Matt Huckett took his tally to 19 for the season with a hat-trick as East Preston won 5-2 at Seaford. David Walker scored twice while replies came from a Duncan Kneller penalty and Simon Halsey.

Tony Burnett netted for Mile Oak as they salvaged a 1-1 draw at home to Shinewater, who had taken the lead through Steve Prodger.

East Grinstead's match with Oving was postoned.

In the second round of the Division Two Cup, goals from Scott Price, Phil Rhodes and Shaun Loft helped Rye United to a 3-2 win over Worthing United, who replied through Adam Westwood and Chris Hibberd.

In a first round tie, Neil Richardson and Don Shepherd scored as Lancing beat Oakwood 2-0.

WITHDEAN lost 3-1 at home to Wallingford in the Combined Counties League.

The key moment came early in the second half when Withdean's Roy Pook skied a penalty with the score at 1-0 to the visitors.

After falling further behind, Carl Southwell reduced the deficit and Withdean proceeded to miss several other chances before Wallingford scored a third on the break.

New goalkeeper John Hall impressued for Withdean.
