Darren Annis scored two minutes into his debut but leaders Shoreham had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Crawley Down in Rich City County League division two.
Annis, signed from Wick, capped his first appearance with a fine individual goal but Robb Young's second half reply secured a well-earned point for a good Crawley Down side.
Shoreham manager Roger Brace said: "Our winning run had to come to an end at some stage.
"It was a cracking game of football and it could have gone either way. Both goalkeepers were outstanding.
"I am not too disappointed because once Crawley Down have played their games in hand I think they will be there or thereabouts."
Crawley Down manager Stuart Hobbs said: "We should have got all three points. It was a hard-fought game. I think they will feel more lucky than we do.
"We had more chances in the latter stages of the game but they were probably the best side we have played this season."
East Preston consolidated second spot with an emphatic 4-0 win over Oakwood, who had started the day in third place.
Matt Huckett became the first player in Sussex to reach the 20-goal mark this season with the final strike in a convincing win.
Duncan Barnes, Ryan Morten and David Walker were also on target while Andy Quigg made an impressive debut in midfield on his return from Wick. For Oakwood, Zak Newman, recently returned from Burgess Hill, hit the crossbar twice.
EP assistant boss Simon Butler said: "We totally outplayed them for 90 minutes and it could have been more. David Walker and Matt Huckett missed two apiece which they would normally put away."
A tongue-lashing from manager Dave Winterton inspired Eastbourne Town a 3-0 win at home to lowly Storrington.
Second-half goals from Sean Brockwell, youth team striker Simon Wolstenholme and Mike Watkin helped lift Town to seventh in the table.
But the Town management were not happy with the first half display. Assistant boss Alan Walsh said: "In the first half we were awful and we gave them a short, sharp lesson at half time. Dave spoke to them for two minutes and then sent them back out to sit on the pitch."
East Grinstead are up to third in the table after a 2-0 win at Shinewater. Matt Thorpe and Steve Greig, with a late strike, were the Grinstead marksmen.
Duncan Jones bagged a hat-trick as Westfield trounced an inconsistent Mile Oak side 6-0. Steve Ringwood chipped in with two goals and Mark Ward got the other.
In the Division Two Cup, substitute Tony Miles scored with his first touch to secure a 4-3 win for Lancing away to Bosham.
Miles, who was making his first appearance back at Lancing from Wick, headed home to put his side 4-2 up with three minutes remaining.
