A series of anti-war activities will take place to coincide with Remembrance Sunday this weekend.

Brighton Peace Coalition says the events will have a reflective theme, encouraging a move from war to peace and lightening the mood in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11 and the bombing of Afghanistan.

A march and rally to protest against events in Afghanistan will take place on Saturday.

Those taking part will gather at The Level in Brighton at noon and march past Brighton War Memorial in Old Steine to the Peace Statue on the seafront for a short programme of music and speeches.

On Sunday, a ceremony entitled A Song for Peace will be held at the Peace Statue at 2pm.

Organisers say it will remember the victims of all wars and encourage a spirit of joy and celebration.

Flowers will be laid at the foot of the statue and peace songs will be sung.

Later on Sunday, An Evening of Remembrance and Reconciliation, organised by Sussex Remembrance and Reconciliation, will be held at the Friends Meeting House in Ship Street, Brighton, at 5pm.

There will be speakers, music, poetry and a candle-lit vigil.

Russell Gassell, a Joseph Rowntree Quaker Fellow, will give a talk on Landmines; The Media, Myths And The Real Issues.

The weekly vigil will take place on Sunday at 7pm at the War Memorial in Old Steine, Brighton.

This will be the 28th vigil in the current series.

A spokeswoman for the Brighton Peace Coalition said it was a group of individuals and organisations which was opposed to the war in Afghanistan and supported a peaceful response to terrorism that was based on international law.
