I was amazed by the correspondent who suggested horses should be used to replace cars and buses (Letters, November 6).
In the days of horse-drawn transport, the busy streets in city centres were littered with something just as objectionable as car fumes.
Lads were employed to sweep crossings clear and were called by the public Sparrow Starvers.
