A policeman was recovering today after being kicked senseless by a gang of thugs in Worthing town centre.
Two officers were surrounded by a gang of 30 yobs as they tried to arrest a man near the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in South Street shortly after 11pm on Saturday.
One policeman was punched in the face and fell to the ground, where he was repeatedly kicked in the head.
Inspector Jeff Lister, of Worthing police, said: "This was a despicable assault on an officer going about his normal duty.
"I hope anyone who witnessed this incident is as appalled as I am by this cowardly attack and I ask them to come forward with any information."
The 25-year-old officer was taken to Worthing Hospital and kept in overnight with mild concussion and severe bruising to his head and face.
Police spokesman Nick Sandford said: "He has now been released from hospital and is recuperating at home."
Mr Sandford said back-up officers were on the scene within two minutes and one man was arrested.
Police are studying town centre CCTV footage and are appealing for witnesses to call 0845 6070999.
