A 12ft long python was seized by police who smashed their way into a suspected drugs den today.
Twenty officers in stab-proof vests carrying shields barged their way into the terraced property and made five arrests.
One person was later allegedly found with ten rocks of crack cocaine inside her knickers.
Police said the Burmese python had been used to deter any unwelcome callers to the address in the city centre.
Internal doors in the house were locked and bolted to slow down police during raids.
Police slapped a sign on the front door after today's operation. It said: "Premises Closed by Sussex Police. Safer Streets. Reducing Crime and Disorder."
Inspector Rob Carden, in charge of the raid, said: "We are chasing people to different addresses in the city. We need help from the public to keep tabs on them.
"If dealers set up shop somewhere we want to know where they are. Give us the information and we'll do the rest."
Police filled bags full of property from today's raid and found dozens of empty wallets and purses in the loft of the house. Hundred of pounds in cash was found.
Mr Carden slipped and put a foot through a ceiling while searching the loft and PC Rob Leet, standing on a landing beneath him, was showered in plaster.
"This job can be dangerous but the effort is worthwhile," said Mr Carden.
"We do not tolerate drug dens and anyone thinking of setting one up had better think again."
The three men and two women arrested were being questioned about drugs, stolen property and handbag snatch.
The snake will be cared for by RSPCA and police.
Mr Carden urged anyone with information to call Brighton police on 0845 6070999.
