Oh, how I agree with Charles Collins (Letters, December 11) about nightclubs and their patrons.
El-Morocco, the Stork Club, Brown Derby, Coconut Grove - all are once-magic names. American, of course, but we had our moments too: Caf de Paris, the Kit Kat Club and the Casino Club.
In the US, though, at that time Benny Goodman was at the Manhattan Room of the Hotel Pennsylvania, Jimmy Dorsey at the Terrace Room of the Hotel Edison, Woody Herman at Roseland and Artie Shaw at the Blue Room at the Hotel Lincoln.
Trouveillets was the place to be, though. Slim Gaillard, Slam Stewart and Scat Man Carruthers were the resident trio on piano, bass and drums. Walter Winchell, Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons actually went there together - there could be no finer recommendation than that.
Trouveillets was owned by Billy Beng. What a deal for a meal these places were when one went out in best bib and tucker.
