Further to John Samson (Letters, December 20), the name Lucifer appears only once in the Bible, in Isaiah 14:12, as an ironic reference to the ruination of the King of Babylon. Through gospel and apocalyptic allusion, early Church Fathers identified Lucifer as the archangel of former great beauty whose downfall is described in Revelations 12:7-9.
But, as Mr Samson doesn't believe the divine authority of the Bible, he may care to read John Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. However, he will be disappointed because, again, his hero comes out not as "the bringer of light" but the ultimate loser.
