For many, allotments evoke images of grubby men decked out in cords and wellies tending their prize marrows.
But in Brighton and Hove the allure of the vegetable plot is attracting a new crowd.
Contrary to popular belief, only a third of plot holders in the city are pensioners. Allotment holders now come in all shapes and sizes, much like their home-grown vegetables.
The resurgence of interest could have something to do with the popularity among trendy young things for organic food.
Nearly all allotments are completely organic. It stands to reason that, in a city full of New Age young families with a penchant for hemp beer and yoga, eating what they preach was an obvious next step.
