The driver managed to bring his Brighton and Hove bus to a halt and none of his 12 passengers was injured.
An ambulance was called and the driver was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. He was later allowed home and doctors said there was no permanent damage to his eye.
The incident happened in Sackville Road, Hove, on Thursday and police are appealing for witnesses.
They want to trace two youths seen standing on a traffic island.
