A supermarket manager was attacked after asking a motorist to slow down as he sped through a car park used by store customers.
The driver stopped and flung his car door open, ramming it into the legs of Paul Lumber, a duty manager at the Co-op in Peacehaven.
Mr Lumber escaped serious injury but was left bruised and shaken by the confrontation in the Meridian Centre car park.
A woman who witnessed the assault noted the vehicle's registration number.
A Co-Op spokeswoman said Mr Lumber had acted in his own capacity as a concerned citizen as the store did not own the car park and its staff had no authority there. She said: "Fortunately, although he was shaken, he was not badly hurt and is now back at work."
Regular Co-Op customer Colin Davis, who is registered blind, praised Mr Lumber for his actions. He said: "He's a man of esteem, a real do-gooder and I was very upset to hear this had happened."
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC Alex Evans at Lewes on 0845 6070999.
