Crime victims are to be given explanations if charges against offenders are dropped or altered.
The scheme, launched throughout Sussex this week, was piloted in Horsham and Chichester and is part of the Government's criminal justice programme.
In the past, victims have been left in the dark when charges have been dropped.
Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Sussex, said: "Better treatment of victims is a key priority for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
"In every case where there is an identifiable victim, a CPS lawyer will write direct to the victim to explain if charges are dropped or substantially altered.
"Initially, victims will be sent a letter from the lawyer who made the decision.
"If the victim requires further explanation a meeting will be offered in certain cases to explain the decision, not review it.
"All CPS lawyers have been trained to ensure victims are treated sensitively and that all letters are written without jargon."
Explanations will be offered in sensitive cases including those involving a death, child abuse, and sexual or racially-aggravated offences.
