I had a very similar experience to J W Jurer ("Gas trouble", Letters, January 3) but with two different electricity suppliers.
I decided to change from NPower to Scottish Gas. Scottish Gas said the changeover would take place on October 3 and to inform the company of the meter reading.
Two weeks later, a meter reader paid a visit. On November 30, I received a grossly inflated bill from the original supplier with a threat to cut off my supply failing an immediate payment, although my contract had terminated two months previously.
It appeared I was likely to be charged for two months electricity supply by both companies.
Did I pay? Of course not. Subsequently, I received my first bill from my new supplier, which carried on from where the old supplier left off using an estimated reading that bore no relation to either my reading or that of the official meter reader.
In terms of cash, it made no different to me so I shall settle up. Obviously, the supply companies have some cosy arrangement among themselves to which the customer is not privy.
Some people might well be worried by the intimidation. I have 25 unused candles - any offers?
