Workers at a new-style job centre being opened today were going on strike in a long-running row over safety.
The JobCentre Plus office, being opened in Birmingham at a cost of £3 million, will deliver advice and benefits help under one roof.
But members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) immediately went on strike.
The union held a nationwide walk-out last year complaining that the removal of security screens from the new offices, which are being opened across the country, left staff vulnerable to attack.
The Government says security guards will be on duty on all floors and CCTV cameras will be installed.
