Of course Brighton and Hove City Council should not squander precious resources on events to mark the Golden Jubilee (Adam Trimingham, The Argus, January 9).

Anyone who thinks it should has their priorities seriously skewed.

The fact that in 2002 we are all still subjects and not true citizens of a politically immature non-democracy with a monarch who has reigned for the past 50 years is no cause for celebration.

I remember the 1977 royal circus and the only good thing to come out of it was God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols.

Please allow me to be the first of your readers to proclaim: "Stuff the jubilee... Roll on the socialist republic."

And that does not mean having President Phoney Blair as head of state.
