A real celluloid heroine, this lady, a Thirties and Forties stock player. Fay Bainter had a husky voice, a gentle demeanour and the sweetest of smiles.
She was twice nominated as best actress and best supporting actress in the Thirties, nominations that caused the Academy rules to be changed. Fay won a deserved Oscar for her role in Jezebel (1938).
Two fond memories for me are of her winning the best mincemeat prize in State Fair (1945), ably abetted by the judge, Donald Meek, and learning to duck a right hook from Danny Kaye in The Kid From Brooklyn (1946).
