Haywards Heath ended a run of five away defeats but there was precious little celebrating done on the way home from the 12-12 draw at Sutton and Epsom.

Heath felt they had the chance to beat the hosts and avenge a heavy defeat at Whitemans Green in the first meeting.

Goal chances went begging and skipper Henry Goodburn said: "We also had good try scoring opportunities and we didn't take them. We were in so many good positions but we turned our good quick ball into slow ball by taking it on too often."

Gordon Denslow put Heath ahead with two penalties but the hosts levelled matters while their scrum half was in the sin bin.

Two more penalties gave Sutton a 12-6 lead but replacement Stuart Charnely was twice on target to earn a point.

Goodburn added: "The side we have got now is a lot stronger than the one Sutton beat at our place. Rick Ure has made a hell of a difference and all the players have learnt a lot."

Heath have now gone 239 minutes without conceding a try and the skipper admitted: "We can't really complain about taking an away point."

The draw was also enough to ensure Heath took the Mason Cup.
