Councillors have followed a controversial recommendation in choosing who should develop the last major open space in central Lewes.
A full meeting of Lewes District Council yesterday awarded the contract for the historic Lewes House site to Ash Mill Developments, despite objections from residents.
The Cabinet approved Ash Mill following tendering from four developers and extensive public consultation.
By mid-December the council had received 82 letters commenting on the bids. Only nine expressed a preference for Ash Mill.
Many criticised all four proposals, citing excessive density of housing, bland design and failure to reflect the character of the town.
Deputy council leader Judith Ost said: "We were very impressed with Ash Mill's focus on working with the community and their commitment to amend their design proposals through further consultation."
