Donald Bearman gained revenge over Darrell Stone in the Steyning Open Road Walk.

He had been beaten by Stone in the Southern 10km last week.

But he overcame his Steyning clubmate by clocking 67min.27sec for the 15km Open.

It is a performance that may enable him to challenge for place in the English team for the 50km walk at the Commonwealth Games at Manchester in July.

Stone was second in 69min.17sec, breaking clear of former AAA 10km track champion Matthew Hales, who was ten seconds behind in third place.

It was nearly ten minutes before Richard Emsley crossed the line in fourth, the first veteran to finish, clocking 79min.02sec. Jo Hesketh was close behind to lead the women home in 82min.19sec.

Kenyan Esther Kiplagat triumphed in the women's event at the Hastings 10km Road Race.

She smashed the course record and won a car for the first woman to beat 33 minutes. Kiplagat was timed at 32min.25sec.

Joanne Hinde (Hastings), second in the Sussex Cross Country Championships this month, led the Sussex female challenge, finishing fifth in 38min.23sec, while veteran Jane Boulton (Crowborough) was the second county runner, clocking 40min.31sec for seventh.

Kenyan Julius Kibet won, beating 19-year-old countryman James Getanda by two seconds in 29min.13sec.

Darryl Hards (Phoenix) was the first Sussex male to finish, claiming eighth spot in 32min.47sec.

Jenny Brown, based in Eastbourne, won the women's event at the Reebok Cross Country Challenge at Cardiff, finishing 27th overall. She clocked 14min.58sec for the 4km course.

Sussex pole vaulters Lucy Webber and Leigh Walker enjoyed success at the Birmingham Indoor Games. Webber won at 3.90m and Walker was fourth in the men's event with 4.30m.
