Simon Morgan could miss his first League match of the season as Albion brace themselves for a hostile welcome at Chesterfield.

The veteran centre half travelled with the squad last night, but boss Peter Taylor revealed: "I think Simon could be struggling. He has got a bit of an Achilles problem as well as a calf."

If Morgan misses out tonight then Taylor will either draft in youngster Adam Virgo or play Kerry Mayo alongside Danny Cullip, with Robbie Pethick at rightback and Paul Watson switching to leftback.

Taylor has also added captain Charlie Oatway, new signing David Lee and Steve Melton to the squad. Oatway was left out of Saturday's dramatic 4-3 home victory over Cambridge United after a battering in the FA Cup defeat by Preston.

Taylor said: "He is such a brave lad. He has got bad ribs and a bad ankle. He was telling me he was fit, but I personally didn't think he was which is why I made that decision.

"He is a terrific pro who just wants to play in every game. Sometimes you have to make that decision for him."

An injury for Ian Walker against Newcastle on Saturday has raised concerns that goalkeeper Simon Royce could be recalled early by Leicester from his month on loan.

Taylor had heard nothing from Leicester by yesterday lunchtime and Royce plays tonight if available, despite a mistake which gifted Cambridge their second equaliser.

Taylor branded the behaviour of former Chesterfield boss Nicky Law an "absolute disgrace" when the teams fought out a fiery 2-2 draw at Withdean a month ago. That match is still the subject of an FA investigation.

Law has moved to Bradford since then and Taylor said: "I think that might take a bit of heat out of the situation, but there is still going to be a bit more to it on the strength of what happened. Because the FA are involved and the referee will know the situation I am sure both teams will be fine, but it's still going to be a very competitive match. They are in quite good form at the moment."

Meanwhile, Bobby Zamora has revealed how Taylor's powers of persuasion launched his second-half hat-trick against Cambridge with a penalty, four days after he missed from the spot against Preston.

Zamora was in two minds about retaining the role, but Taylor revealed to The Argus last week that he wanted the 22-goal hotshot on the spot again.

Zamora said: "I was half contemplating not taking the penalty, but the gaffer told me earlier in the week to be strong.

"It was in my mind after Preston, but when the penalty cropped up I just grabbed the ball before I could start thinking about it. I put a bit more power on it, like Peter suggested."

Opening goalscorer Gary Hart said: "I was telling Bobby to calm down in the first half, because he was getting frustrated. In the end he did and scored three. It wasn't his best game in the world, but he seems to be like a magnet."
