Horsham boss John Maggs was furious after watching his side throw away a three goal lead in the final ten minutes at Theobalds Lane to draw 3-3 with lowly Cheshunt in division two.
He said: "I'm disgusted. I never thought I'd see that happen from a team of mine. We were coasting and then we committed suicide.
"There's no excuse except for our own sloppiness. We've thrown two points away and we could have thrown away the championship."
Hornets are hot on the heels of Lewes in the race for the title and looked in total control until the 80th minute when a looping cross from the right allowed the unmarked Darryl Cox to nod the ball over the stranded Ian Chatfield.
A minute later Horsham were picking the ball out of the net again after Cox battled through on the left and calmly lifted the ball over Chatfield.
The Hornets' misery was completed three minutes into injury time when substitute Patrick Yembe neatly stroked a 20-yard free kick wide of the Horsham wall and into the corner of the net.
Horsham had strolled into a convincing lead with three headed goals. Jamie Taylor got the first after 12 minutes, running in to convert Lee Carney's right-wing free-kick from eight yards.
Tommy Warrilow made it 2-0 a minute before the break from another Carney set-piece with a looping header that went over goalkeeper Chris Andrews and just inside the left post.
Substitute Ben Jones made it 3-0 after Stuart Hardy had won the ball on the halfway line before breaking down the right flank and cutting the ball back neatly for the substitute to power past Andrews in the 69th minute.
Lewes are eight points clear at the top of division two after a convincing 3-0 win at Tilbury.
The rampaging Rooks almost went ahead on 15 minutes when Justin Harris robbed a defender before crossing for Lee Newman . He shot on the turn but his effort was saved by Tilbury goalkeeper Mark Hardingham.
The visitors took control with two goals inside a minute on the half-hour mark. Newman passed to Sam Francis and his 25 yard shot went in off the underside of the crossbar. Then Newman added the second after his fierce strike from the edge of the area seemed to deceive Hardingham.
Tilbury's Kevin Stubbs struck the post on 36 minutes. The third goal for the Rooks came in the 76th minute when Harris' free kick was touched to Michael Ebank who scored his first goal for the club.
