Small businesses in Sussex are being warned they could get left behind if they fail to keep up with changes in information technology (IT).
According to business support organisation Sussex Enterprise, more than 90 per cent of small businesses in the county are connected to the internet but only 30 per cent use it to help run their business.
The group is hoping to encourage more firms to take advantage of the internet and has organised a seminar to help businesses understand which systems they need to survive and the future for e-commerce.
Mark Brunet, information technology specialist from Sussex Enterprise said: "The pace at which IT changes is set to increase dramatically over the next few years. Companies that don't have effective systems may lose out to their competitors.
"The seminar aims to get business professionals to understand the issues they face. This should help them take control of their IT system and make it work for their business."
Mr Brunet welcomed the chance of explaining the broad range of current and future IT developments from using email and on-line trading to speech recognition and data protection.
"This will give businesses a greater understanding of what is available and the most effective methods for their type of business. The next step will be to offer businesses advice about their individual needs."
Through UK Online, the Government's push to get more businesses to take up new technology and make the UK the best place in the world for e-commerce, Sussex Enterprise is offering the opportunity of one-to-one sessions with experts.
Mr Brunet said: "Large companies are already doing most of their business over the internet. It is vital small businesses don't lose out due to ignorance."
Andy Carr, area director for Sussex Enterprise, said: "This event is part of a series which aim to tackle a range of key issues affecting businesses as a result of the changing economic climate.
"The Local Economic Group is comprised of a number of business leaders who work closely with Sussex Enterprise to make sure services and advice are made easily available."
The seminar will be on Friday at the Ardington Hotel in Worthing.
