Martin Lee last night told his British Davis Cup team mates: "You can count on me."
The 24-year-old from East Preston is on standby for either Tim Henman or Greg Rusedski in the World Group tie against Sweden starting in Birmingham tomorrow.
Lee believes he has come of age and will cope with the pressure-cooker atmosphere.
He said: "It's not the question of me making up the numbers any more. If Tim or Greg get injured, I'm going to play. I've got to be ready and I will be.
"I'd love to be on a winning team. I've never been on a losing side in Davis Cup and I don't want it to change now.
"It is the first time I've played in a World Group Tie. These are the tough matches you want to be involved with.
"We haven't won one for a long time.
"Sweden have a strong side even with the injury doubts over Thomas Johansson (the Australian Open Champion), but I believe we have got a good chance to win."
Johansson returned to Birmingham last night after treatment on a groin injury and faces a race against time to prove his fitness for the clash.
Swedish captain Calle Hageskog said: "I would hope to play Thomas Johansson at some stage over the weekend."
Thomas Enqvist and Jonas Bjorkman are likely to play in the singles if Sweden are forced to play without Johansson, although Magnus Larsson could also be used. Robin Soderling has also joined up with the team as cover.
