Ten-year-old John Howard, from Littlehampton, and Kirstie Russell, 14,

from Newhaven, are remarkable children.

They have been selected from thousands of nominations to receive awards as children of achievement at a London hotel tomorrow.

Kirstie, who goes to school in Brighton, has overcome severe health problems with verve and zest.

John, who has spina bifida, hasn't let being in a wheelchair or on crutches stop him playing sports such as hockey and basketball.

Both of these youngsters regard their health problems as a challenge to be overcome rather than an excuse for inactivity.

It's easy for older generations to complain about children and in many cases there's justification in the moans.

But kids such as Kirstie and John, and others like them, fully deserve their awards and their evening in the lime-

light.
