A nursery school at a community centre is facing closure after money for workers' wages was stolen.
Pupil numbers have dropped at the Carden Park Pre-School since Christmas and last week two of the morning staff had to be laid off.
Last week funds were hit when a cash box containing £270, the week's takings, was snatched.
Organisers, who charge £4.50 for a morning's care of children from 18 months, said they were desperately looking for help to stay running.
Senior supervisor Sandie Denyer said: "We've been in trouble since Christmas when the numbers dropped unexpectedly."
She added: "There's no money in the kitty. We needed the £270 so staff could bank their pay cheques.
"We've been going for 14 years and nothing like this has ever happened before. It's come at an absolutely terrible time for us."
The school, which runs from 9.30am to 12.40pm, is the focal point of the Hollingbury Community Centre for parents running a cafe, morning activities and a weekly health clinic.
Mrs Denyer said: "We're a lovely little group but if the numbers don't keep up we're going to be in real trouble."
The organisers are appealing for businesses in the area to contact them if they can lend a hand.
Parents with inquiries should also contact the school on 01273 540779.
