to rent to people on housing benefit because they have had appalling experiences, specifically with people on benefits "trashing properties" or being late paying rent. These offensive and discriminatory comments contribute to the stereotyping of people on benefits being less responsible and more "feckless" towards where they live.
Housing benefit can be paid directly to the landlord, so guaranteeing the rent. Tenants can trash properties regardless of whether they are on benefits or not it is a risk landlords are paid to take, whoever the tenant, and no amount of good bank references will guarantee a person's character, how they are likely to treat the property or if they will pay the rent on time.
