Lewes boss Jimmy Quinn is determined not to be left short again.

The Rooks were down to the bare bones for last Saturday's FA Vase game with Tow Law Town with nine players ruled out through being cup tied, injured, ill or on holiday.

Plans were not helped when Ryan Hackett, who recently switched to Redhill, failed to turn up after agreeing to be a substitute.

It meant Quinn had to name youngsters Darren Gearing, Sam Long and Dave Suter on the bench alongside Peter Brackley, who had not expected to play again this season due to a broken wrist.

Now Quinn is hoping to cover himself so that he does not suffer the same problems again.

The first signing is striker Clinton More, who joins from Selsey after starting the season with Eastbourne Borough.

More has been a long term target for Quinn and the bonus is that he is eligible to play in the next round of the Vase against AFC Sudbury on March 2.

Quinn may also extend relations with St Leonards. Lewes players have gone on loan to Saints this season and there is talk one or two St Leonards players may sign forms with the Rooks in case of emergencies.

Eastbourne Borough's Andy Walker has signed for Lewes but he has subsequently joined County League leaders Burgess Hill.

On the injury front, Ross Venables (ankle) is hopeful of being fit in time for the Sudbury match and Chris Dicker, who missed the Tow Law match with flu, was due to return to action for the reserves today.

Quinn has confirmed he will have Vase favourites Sudbury watched twice before the quarter final showdown but in the meantime he will focus his players' minds on maintaining their place at the top of Ryman League Division Two.

Quinn said: "We want to do as well as we can in the league and we are certainly not sacrificing the league for anything. That is our No. 1 priority."

Meanwhile, former chairman Steve White has been appointed a director at Lewes. White was the man who appointed Quinn in 1998 but he left the club over boardroom politics.

Horsham were set to give striker Dave Flemming his debut today after signing him from Folkestone.

The 29-year-old goalgetter has been standing in for Nicky Dent with the Dr Martens Premier side recently, having scored three goals in seven starts for Welling earlier in the season.

He was previously with Enfield and also had a spell in France with Dunkirk.

Boss John Maggs admitted he was taking a bit of a gamble.

Maggs said: "I am taking him on recommendations and also on the fact that he has been playing for some good sides.

"He was released at the beginning of the week and Arlesey Town have made an approach but we have got in first.

"I have been working very hard to bring someone in and hopefully it has paid off."
