I was very pleased to read the comments of Tony Woodhouse, general manager of the Brighton and Hove Philharmonic Society (Letters, February 8), concerning John Ogdon, the great pianist.
Having attended concerts of the BHPS over the past 46 years, I can recall the vivid performances Ogdon gave at the Dome in the Sixties and Seventies with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, which were usually sold out as soon as booking began, such was his reputation.
For the past three years, while the Dome was closed, the BHPS has put on a splendid series of concerts at other local venues but these had to be tailored to the size of the halls and it was not possible to perform the really large works employing a full symphony orchestra.
The good news is the Dome is about to re-open (February 24) and soon we shall be able to enjoy the full symphonic and concerto repertoire. Roll on Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and all the great romantic works so we may hear the splendid Brighton Phil in all its glory, conducted by the hugely admired Barry Wordsworth and others.
