A man has demanded compensation after his car was impounded by mistake.
Kenneth Burgoyne, of St Leonard's Road, Hove, had to pay £135 to release his Ford Sierra when it was towed away from outside his house.
Parking attendants working for Brighton and Hove City Council said he was illegally parked in a disabled bay.
Mr Burgoyne said: "An elderly man used to live here and he had a disabled parking place.
"When he died, the council blacked in the white lines and the word disabled but they didn't remove the sign.
"The paint had worn away so you could see the markings and it looked like a disabled spot instead of normal street parking."
Mr Burgoyne wrote to the council demanding a refund and asked for the lines and sign to be removed.
Council workers repainted the road markings but failed to take down the sign.
Mr Burgoyne said: "The situation is waiting to happen all over again.
"I want compensation for the distress this has caused and for the letters and phone calls I have had to make."
A spokeswoman for the council said Mr Burgoyne's money would be refunded within two weeks.
She said: "Our highways department has issued an instruction for the sign to be removed within a couple of days and the markings to be burnt off within four to six weeks."
