Network Electronic Publishing, a web site marketing and new media production company, is continuing to bank new business despite the downturn in the financial services sector.

The Arundel-based firm has designed a £100,000 campaign for offshore banking specialist HSBC Bank International.

Networx claims the bank is the first in the UK time zone to introduce expandable banners, which are relatively new to the web, into its global advertising campaign.

The new adverts are directed at expatriates.

The banners, which in-clude animations and sound, present mini case-histories to illustrate product and service benefits and capture information about visitors.

Networx's managing director Martin Huxford said they banners were also a way of making web navigation easier.

He said: "They enable companies to present a mini web site within a page, making it an easy point of access for further information.

"Instead of having to jump to a different site every five seconds you can send and receive all the information you need on one page."

The new format is inter-active, providing information whenever the cursor is moved over the banner.

Mr Huxford said: "That in itself is enough to draw someone's interest, unlike normal static banners, which do not react to visitors."

The banners are geared towards getting information about potential customers and include buttons inviting clients to "call me" and "apply now".

Expandable banners are one of the several new dev-elopments to increase the effectiveness of web site advertising.

Although online advertising is still being bought and sold at a very high rate, analysts have said banner advertising has become less effective as a marketing tool.

The average percentage of people clicking on banners has fallen dramatically over the last couple of years and averages of 0.3 per cent are not untypical. Banners designed to generate a response have done considerably better than average.

The campaign is running from the middle of this month to the end of next on 25 personal finance sites, including bbcworld.com, europe.cnn. com, observer.co.uk and globalnetwork.co.uk.
